What would you do if you found a magic wand? Anyone with the sense the Gods gave a boar would know the answer to that question. You make the rogue pick it up. Who knows what kind of strange protection a magical item will have on it. There are reasons treasure stays untouched for so long before you find it. That’s why every party has a rogue after all; they test the traps, head into dark places first, and when necessary, act as bait.
Perhaps that is also why their lifespan is shorter than even a fighter’s.
Quickly one learns never to travel without a few handy rogues about, although they come with their own kind of trouble. Pick-pocketing, lying, stealing… unsavory things that are just in their nature. Anyone claiming to be an honest thief is lying. Either to you or themselves. However one cannot travel without them. Mages are far too useful to subject to that kind of fate by luck lifestyle.
If no rogues are handy, hope your mage can read ancient ruins well enough to pick it up though.
